Tree Risk Assessment

An evaluation of tree risk is a service that goes beyond a general tree inspection.

Tree risk assessment is conducted by a qualified arborist.  It is appropriate in cases where a property owner is unclear as to the level of risk posed by a tree, and in which safety issues are a primary concern. It is also appropriate when a customer wishes to document the risks associated with a tree, and develop a strategy to manage and prioritize those risks responsibly.

There are three levels of risk assessment: 1, 2, and 3.  The level of assessment will depend on the expectations of the customer, and the intensity of the inspection.  Most risk assessments we perform are Level 2.

Tree risk assessments are best for:

  • Trees that are highly desirable, but may also have problems that could lead to failure.
  • Trees with defects, such as cavities, cracks, seams, or hollows; or mushrooms growing from the tree parts
  • Situations where a property owner has been notified that a tree may be hazardous or dangerous.

Tree risk assessments are not appropriate for:

  • Trees that are obviously dead
  • General property inspections (risk assessments may be recommended as a follow up)
  • Small trees that would not cause significant property damage.

A tree risk assessment includes a site visit, inspection, and visual analysis using the American National Standard, ANSI A300 (Part 9).  A complete risk assessment report is included.  In cases where internal decay is suspected, the Resistograph® or other diagnostic instruments may be recommended.
